Chapter 193: How did it happen?
Chapter - 193
"How did it happen?" Alex sat in front of Karen and asked.
When he got to the hospital, Karen was still unconscious. So he decided to talk with the doctor in the meantime.
There was nothing to worry about, actually. From what doctors told Alex, Karen had a fracture in her ankle and forearm. They were the only big injuries she had. Other than that, there were also a few scrapes which were nothing serious. As for why Karen was still unconscious, it was most likely due to the concussion she suffered during the fall.
But the doctors had checked it, and it was nothing serious.
"She should be awake in half an hour or so" That was what the doctor told Alex.
As for how she ended up in the ER, it was most likely that Karen, while walking down the stairs, slipped on her heels and tumbled down the stairs. They did not know for sure, but from what the neighbours told the first responders. And since they did not find any evidence of assault, it was safe to assume that it was most likely an accident.
Now that the doctor had said that everything was fine, there was nothing more Alex could ask for. He paid the hospital fees at the reception and decided to wait for Karen to wake up in her room. It took Karen fifteen-twenty minutes more to finally open her eyes.
And the first thing she saw was Alex's face.
'What is he doing in her room?' This was the first thought that came to her mind. Karen was surprised. She felt like she was dreaming, 'Did he break in? What about her husband?'
But when Karen looked past Alex and found herself in a different setting than her room, memories of what happened began to come to her. She was heading for the party organised by Jessica when she fell off the stairs, and everything blacked out after that.
"How did you get here?" Karen asked.
"I got a call from the hospital. Looks like you saved my number as your emergency contact," Alex patiently told Karen. It was best that he took things slowly. Scolding can come afterwards.
"That..." Karen was dumbfounded and embarrassed when she heard that. She clearly remembered when and why she did that.
It was the very next day after she woke up drowning herself in alcohol the previous night. And she remembered it all. Alex took her all the way home, her vomiting all over Alex and even how he tucked her in bed, ignoring her husband's protest. Karen remembered it all. And unknowingly, she was smiling ear to ear thinking about Alex.
It was at that moment that she decided to save Alex's number as her emergency contact, hoping that he would come running any time she needed him. But soon afterwards, Alex left the company, and they contacted each other less and less. And Karen seems to have forgotten about it all.
"I guess I did it by mistake," Karen knew perfectly well why she did it, but she still could not admit it, much like Claire, "Sorry... You had to run all the way here for nothing," Karen apologised with her head hung low.
"How is it nothing?" Alex almost yelled at Karen, startling her. Alex has never once raised his voice against it, but this time he did. Alex was clearly angry.
"Do you have any idea how worried I was? Why wear those stupid heels if you can't even walk properly in them?"
"Can't you wear flats? Or all you women think about is being taller than men? What if something..."
"Why?"
"Huh...?"
"Why were you worried about me?"
"What do you mean why? Isn't it normal to be worried about someone I know?"
"Is that the only reason?"
"What... What else would there be?"
"I am asking you one last time. Why were you worried about me?"
"..."
"Just say it. Say that because you love her. Why are you dilly-dallying?" While Alex remained silent, the door opened, and a middle-aged nurse walked in with a chart in her hand.
"And where the hell was you when your wife got hurt?" The nurse said, but then she looked at Alex upside down, "Look at you. So you were out partying. Why are all men the same?" The nurse put her hands on her hips and looked at Alex, disappointed. Alex, on the other hand, frowned when he heard the nurse. Why was she butting in for no reason?
But sandwiched between the two was the blushing Karen, 'Wife?'
"Still... I will give you points that you got here as soon as we informed you," The nurse said and turned towards Karen, "Just let him off the hook this one time. But the next time he does something foolish like this, makes sure you teach him a good lesson. Maybe have your mother visit you. Men are afraid of their mother-in-laws the most. Hehehe..." The nurse filled Karen's head with ideas.
"All the nurses are required in the ER... ASAP. I repeat... All the nurses are required in the ER... ASAP." The hospital rang with the announcement.
"What is this time? Can't I even have a moment of peace for myself?" The nurse grumbled as she hung Karen's chart by her bed, "I will be back to check up on you." Saying so, the nurse walked out of the room, but outside she bumped into another nurse running.
The nurse stopped her colleague and asked.
"What is it? What's the emergency?"
"You don't know?" The nurse looked surprised, "It is Jaleel Unani, the only grandson of the Unani family head. He was found stabbed along with more than half a dozen of his friends in an alley by the dumpster. The hospital is in an uproar. If something were to happen to him..." But before the nurse could complete, the nurse from Karen's room grabbed her arm and pulled her away.
"Then why are you wasting time here telling me all this? Hurry..." Alex, who was in the room, looking at there treating figure of the nurses turned his face towards Karen and calmly asked, "So how did it happen?"
