Chapter 278: Ground Zero, Fights and Weapons

As the fight above was ramping up, and the gods were finally starting to get serious, the situation on the ground was also escalating further.

Everyone had heard the impact of Luffy and Enel's combined attacks, the deafening gong of their fists colliding and crushing IMU in between them. 

It had shaken the hearts of everyone present in the Holy Land. It further cemented the idea to the regular folk that they truly were out of their depths.

They had quite a few people on their side, but the opposing forces were clearly outnumbering them. And it wasn't just an issue of numbers, they were also outmatched for the most part.

Besides the most powerful Liutentants of Enel's army, there were plenty of other strong people under his employ. 

The soldiers were still recovering from the gigantic impact of the gods before they started taking heavy fire. In fact, the entire Holy Land was now under heavy bombardment, as the islands that pulled forward seemed to be more so equipped as gigantic battleships.

A good number of people were stuck managing those cannons but for a good reason. It enabled them to rain down explosive ordinance across the scattered forces of the World Government.

It was also helpful in distracting the Elders...

Saint Saturn for example, as the closest elder to the islands, received the most potshots out of anyone. Hundreds upon hundreds, he was forced to grow new legs to defend himself against them.

Eventually, Sengoku's palm hit him at just the right time, and one red cannonball slipped into his defences and exploded right into his face, which blinded him for a split second. 

Garp and Zephyr were able to take that opportunity, jumping forward and delivering a combined blow to Saturn's head, breaking his nose and the two gigantic horns on his head.

The punch also sent the gigantic spider flying backwards, right into a gigantic wall of Magma. 

"Burn to hell, you bastard!" Akainu's angered voice resounded as his magma completely devoured the gigantic Elder. 

For a second, the people manning the cannons even thought that Saturn was dead, and they all gave the achievement to their leader, who stood there, dazed that his shot had done anything. 

"AS EXPECTED OF LORD BUGGY!" An entire crew shouted in glee as they stood behind their captain.

Buggy was just standing there, flabbergasted and slightly trembling before scowling and shouting at his men to stop fooling around and keep shooting. 

They listened to him, especially after realising that taking down an Elder was not going to be that easy...

Saint Staurn's gigantic body soared out of the Magma pit that Akainu had created for him, he roared and his legs immediately started moving around at mad speeds, skewering anything in proximity.

Garp had managed to sidestep the attack, but Zephyr was not quite as lucky, he was about to get hit directly in the torso, only managing to avoid it thanks to the sudden surge of Gravity that crushed Saturn into the ground and gave Zephyr enough time to jump backwards.

Sengoku and Garp acted immediately.

"Impact Wave!" "Galaxy Impact!" 

The two of them created a combined shockwave large enough to force Saturn to remain embedded in the ground. The strike also caused plenty of damage, to the point where both Garp and Sengoku could hear their opponent's bones cracking under the pressure.

Fujitora's gravity was also doing wonders in suppressing and further increasing the intensity and weight of Garp and Sengoku's attacks.

But their attack was stopped the moment Saturn grew more and more legs, one of them stabbing straight through Sengoku's Golden Buddha body.

This time, he hadn't even bothered trying to attack Garp, opting for the obviously larger target. 

 Garp immediately scowled and threw another punch.

 "Corkscrew Impact!" A shockwave was immediately created, this time with a spin as Garp twisted his fist as he threw the punch out.

The Corkscrew Impact shredded apart the outer layers of the exoskeleton that had grown on Saturn's gigantic legs, forcing him to buckle under his own increased weight once more. 

 "Ice Age!" This time, the ground underneath him was no longer hot, instead it turned into a glacial winter, with ice spreading out all around him.

And from underneath him, just as he was hitting the ground, gigantic ice spikes rose.

They immediately turned black and skewered the Elder's main body, filling the ground around them with blood.

In that instant, Saturn's movements died down, his limbs hanging limply as he lay there slain.

Aokiji looked at him with narrowed eyes, his finger rising up as frost started to cover Saturn's entire body.

"Hmph, finally keeling over..." Akainu muttered as he looked at the other fights for a second, but then, for a split second, he sensed something, and his ears perked up.

But before it was covered completely, one of Starun's legs shot up once more, this time directly towards the former Ice Admiral's chest.

"AOKIJI! Dodge!" 

Thankfully, the cold must have made Saturn sluggish at least, coupled with Akainu's warning at least allowed Kuzan to pull himself to the side, unfortunately, his left arm was still severed and destroyed by the gigantic stinger.

Regardless, he didn't panic. Such wounds were after all inconsequential thanks to the 'medic' they had on their side, he just needed to survive.

The former Ice Admiral merely froze the bleeding closed for now and immediately started bombarding the now rampaging Elder with more and more ice spears.

 Garp also got close and personal this time, using shave to appear right in front of Saturn's face, and delivering a punch that caused such a sickening crunch that it made any listener wince.

Garp fists were weapons at the end of the day. Hell, they were strong enough to break through Kaido's Haki-enhanced Hassaikai. 

Strangely enough, by comparison, Saturn's face seemed to be somehow even harder to break, but he still pushed the spider demon further backwards, to the point where he was essentially smack in the middle of the Holy Land.

His accumulated injuries seemed to be slowing him down greatly, but the most concerning part was the fact that they were visibly healing.

On another side of the Holy Land, another Elder was having his own difficult time.

Saint Peter in his Worm Form could be said to have it the worst. 

'This is really annoying...'

He was faced against a prime Whitebeard and was essentially his greatest counter. The Emperor's powerful quakes greatly suppressed his primary fighting style, which was to dive into the ground and take enemies by surprise.

Creating a network underneath them and trapping them in a sinkhole was also one of his favourite methods, but it was impossible to do, as any tunnel he made would be closed instantly by an earthquake. 

 But surprisingly, aside from suppressing his fighting style, Whitebeard was not even the most annoying opponent he had to face.

"Yohohohoho~" Saint Sheperd heard a peal of laughter on his body, he immediately twisted to bite at the sound, only to bite at air. 

"Three Paced Hum~ God Slash!" As the fancily dressed skeleton sheathed his cane sword, a dozen or so gigantic gashes opened up all over the gigantic demonic worm's body.

'That's the god damned 3rd time this has happened!' 

The cuts healed just as quickly as they were made, but it was still annoying.

"Ifrit Jambe: Hell's Memories" 

It didn't help that Brook was accompanied by an equally strong and annoying blonde cook. His kick covered entirely in blue flames seared right through the gigantic worm's body, damaging many organs and allowing Sanji to pass right through. 

"Fire Fist!" 

He could really catch no break, as he opened up his mouth to swallow Sanji, only to swallow a gigantic ball of fire, which filled him up to the point where he was spewing flames from the many holes that had been created into his body.

"Gurararara~ Not so easy, huh, oh great Elder?!" 

Whitebeard mocked him for a second, before jumping forward and appearing on one side of his gigantic still healing body.

"Collapsing Tremor!" With a powerful punch, the very space in front of his fist broke, and every single internal organ within Saint Sheperd twisted and burst, allowing enough blood to flow to douse the flames that Ace was still stuffing his face with. 

A pained roar was all that Saint Shepard could muster as he twisted in that place, whipping his tail around madly, only to be either cut, burned, kicked or clawed at by a blue Pheonix.

To make it even worse, any damage he did to any of them would be healed by said Pheonix rather quickly, which was why none of them had any significant injuries currently.

"God's Knights!" He was the first of the elders to call for help, which was fitting as he was also the youngest.

In an instant, one of the God Knights made his way towards them, a burly man in a white suit, his weapon of choice being a pair of golden knuckles, turned a deep black as a thick coat of haki coated them.

In an instant, the God Knight rushed towards the closest person, that being Sanji. The blonde cook just scowled and tilted his head, not even putting out his cigar as the man swung his fist, aiming straight for the head.

However, before his fist could even brush against Sanji's skin, the Straw Hat cook whipped his leg upwards, slamming his heel into the God Knight's chin, crushing it and shattering his jaw completely whilst sending him flying like a bullet right back where he had come from. 

 This shocked the Worm Demon quite a bit.

'Even if the God Knights aren't the strongest, they should still be able to kill any Yonko commanders... They shouldn't be that easy to dispatch...' 

 But he didn't have time to think too much further about that, as Whitebeard sent another tremor flying through his body.

Another God Knight rushed forward as well, but this time he didn't even get close enough to wind up a punch, as Brook's figure walked past him and his head simply flew off to the side. 

"Yohohoh~ I'll help the others and take care of these so-called 'God Knights'~' The Skeleton Musician cheerfully said whilst sheathing his cane sword and walking towards them. 

Sanji just nodded and turned his attention back to the elder. 

It was around that time that it was heard... Broadcasted through the entire Holy Land, and likely a great part of the Red Line... The pained and agonizing screams of a tortured woman.
