Chapter 121 - 108: The Eyes on the Body
Real-life battles are often much harder than those in games.
Lu Yuan didn’t have a map, so every time he walked a distance, he would kick the wall hard and swing his long sword to make a mark.
The walls were all solid and very thick, impossible to destroy with brute force.
What was even more terrifying was that these marks would slowly disappear. As soon as the light was moved away, in the darkness, it seemed as if an invisible hand wiped all these marks clean.
"Don’t worry, I, Old Cat, can record all the terrain. As long as you thoroughly explore the labyrinth, I can draw out the complete map,"
"There’s no need to make these marks."
Lu Yuan fell silent for a while, now it seemed that he could only rely on this crude method.
There’s a very simple method to navigate a maze: keep going left; or keep going right.
Even if you hit a dead end, after returning to the fork, continue to always go left, or right.
This way, you can avoid retracing your steps, and by process of elimination, traverse the entire maze.
"Damn, it’s dark."
The light in his hand grew dimmer, and a large amount of water droplets fell from above, dripping onto his armor.
These droplets were just ordinary water, non-poisonous, but they carried with them the stench of decay. The walls were pitted and uneven, and some stalactites, just like eyes, quietly watched the passerby.
"Sussing out the opponent’s Divine Skill while hiding your own is the core of battle,"
The Monster has so far shown abilities of Different Space, Spiritual Attack, and that multi-eyed minion."
"This cavern seems to be naturally formed... If it could create matter, it would be a god."
"That is to say, the Monster used Different Space to transport the entire cavern inside, forming its own territory, just like a paradise within a cave—the ultimate development of Different Space."
Lu Yuan pondered for a long time and still didn’t know how he should kill this Monster.
Because as long as the Monster hid its main body and kept sending minions to exhaust Lu Yuan, it could remain in an invincible position.
He could only hope that the Monster was not very intelligent and would not choose to do so...
Or that it didn’t have many underlings since the Monster was trapped in the Time Cage and actually didn’t have much time to develop.
It was even possible that the Monster had other goals and didn’t merely want to capture him to eat...
But no matter what, this battle was too difficult.
A natural disaster is called such because its difficulty is almost unsolvable... Lu Yuan could defeat a Demon, but might not necessarily defeat a Monster.
"If someone transported a nuclear bomb here, would there be a chance to blow up the labyrinth?"
Old Cat said, "There’s significant Idealist Interference here. Many high-precision Technology Weapons may fail."
"Of course, in the Early Epoch, nuclear bombs might be useful. As time goes on and these creatures grow, and the maze gets bigger, they might become useless."
Old Cat paused for a moment: "Someone is following you."
"I know."
Lu Yuan stopped in his tracks.
Almost simultaneously, the footsteps behind him that had perfectly synchronized with his own also stopped.
The Third Eye on the back of the Donkey Head Mask faintly caught a glimpse of a strange face and a pale hand covered with eyes.
"I’ll see how long you can hold out."
"Old Cat, keep an eye on it for me."
Chasing this thing in the dark was irrational, so Lu Yuan simply kept on exploring ahead on his own.
Soon, he came upon a wall covered with moss, smelling a rotting, bloody stench.
With the intent not to overlook any clue, he scraped off the moss with his long sword.
He found a lizard man’s corpse embedded in the wall, holding a backpack in its arms.
He opened the backpack and found a blood-stained booklet inside.
[A booklet suspected to contain some information, but translating these texts will take some time.]
Lu Yuan took a deep breath. It seemed that it took a week or two for his Pioneer’s Eye to translate the texts of the Meida Civilization?
He surely couldn’t last that long in this cave.
"This guy seems to have used a bomb to blast a hole in the wall," Old Cat analyzed. "Then he buried himself in, using the principle that the wall would automatically restore itself, making it appear as though he was embedded in it. Judging by the rate of decay, he probably died three to five days ago."
Suddenly, a scarlet eye burrowed out from the moss-covered wall!
It lunged viciously toward Lu Yuan’s face!!
The attack was swift and fierce. Most of Lu Yuan’s attention had been on the Monster that had followed him and the corpse in front of him, leaving him somewhat unprepared.
He let out a low growl and executed a sidestep that a normal person couldn’t accomplish.
The scarlet eyeball brushed past his armor.
At that moment, the dark shadow that had been tracking him suddenly accelerated, closing in behind Lu Yuan.
The cold, pale arm landed on his shoulder and squeezed hard.
An indescribable strength transferred through that arm.
Even though the Black Iron Scale Armor separated him from the cold, Lu Yuan still felt a chill throughout his body, and his shoulder was in excruciating pain.
He had just thought about turning around to counterattack when Old Wolf, hidden in the backpack, suddenly popped his head out, unleashed his ferocity, and bit at the opponent.
"Ao?!"
This crafty wolf had simply taken that one bite.
<><>
After seeing the fierce look of the aggressor, its teeth almost fell out in terror, and it quickly withdrew back into the backpack.
Fortunately, this bite bought Lu Yuan some time. He calmly drew his sword, which gleamed with red light, and chopped off the arm that was draped over him.
Then he took out a rope from his belt loops and threw it behind him, attempting to capture the creature alive.
The rope was made from Cannibal Flower’s Vine.
It was even more sturdy than a steel cable, and its tiny barbs carried a paralyzing toxin.
It wasn’t lethal, but it was very effective against life forms.
The obscure humanoid life form was instantly bound, struggling violently.
Its body was covered with eyes, a hundred, two hundred, three hundred... Those eyes looked at him in a bizarre way!
Lu Yuan clenched his teeth, not daring to look around, because if he did, he might suffer a spiritual attack.
He could only rely on the "Third Eye" to sense things vaguely.
In the next instant, the creature ensnared by the rope let out an angry roar, and a blood-red eyeball grew on the rope.
The rope snapped.
The monster swiftly fled into the darkness.
Cold sweat dripped from Lu Yuan’s forehead. "Damn it, I should’ve killed it..." n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
He looked at the arm that had fallen to the ground.
[Unknown creature’s arm, exceptionally strong, suspected to have the ability of a "Giant arm."]
"Damn, why does each monster have slightly different abilities?" He clearly remembered that the baby he just killed had the powers of "Gravity Control" and "Swift Flash."
Now, on his shoulder, at the spot that had just been attacked, there appeared a sticky, greenish palm print, as conspicuous as fluorescent powder.
All of a sudden!
Lu Yuan could not help but howl in pain. His shoulder was hurting more and more, as if there was an iron drill boring into his flesh.
The intense pain, akin to giving birth, caused his body to spasm repeatedly.
He had no choice but to take off his scale armor and found a crimson eye emerging from his flesh!
"What is this... How is it possible?" Even with his strong psyche, Lu Yuan couldn’t help but feel terrified. The eyeball grew larger and larger, soon the size of a table tennis ball, staring intently at him.
Black Iron Equipment is intended to block superpowers. Such isolation is admittedly not infinite, but to be affected just by a touch was beyond his psychological expectations.
Even his Extraordinary Spark showed no reaction because the extra eye seemed like it belonged to him.
A strange and icy message emanated from the crimson eye, as if it wanted to transmit everything it saw into his mind.
Lu Yuan clenched his teeth, raised his knife, and gouged the wriggling eyeball from the flesh, trembling all over from the intense pain.
That strange and icy sensation finally disappeared, and he breathed a long sigh of relief.
"Comrade... what are you doing?" Old Cat couldn’t hold back any longer and asked in confusion.
"Didn’t you see I was afflicted? If I don’t take harsh measures, I might have to respawn," Lu Yuan gasped heavily, sweat dripping from his forehead.
Old Cat was skeptical, "Affected by what... All I saw was you self-harming, inexplicably cutting off a chunk of your own flesh."
The cave fell silent once more, with only the constant "drip, drip, drop" of water falling from above.
Lu Yuan broke out in sweat, feeling a tremendous psychological pressure bearing down on him.
"Things are tricky, Old Cat. I can’t distinguish between reality and illusion."
He always felt that something in the shadows was watching him. Pair after pair of eyes hidden deep within the cave, smiling soundlessly.
He first identified himself.
No debuffs were detected.
"Pioneer’s Eye" is not omnipotent; it’s just a Divine Skill.
Between Divine Skills, there are relationships of restraint. The stronger ones will overshadow the weaker ones.
If Lu Yuan himself went mad, he couldn’t blame the lack of power.
The oil lamp he held flickered weakly, casting a feeble light.
He crouched down, picked up the piece of flesh, and indeed saw a fierce and crimson eye focusing on him.
He didn’t know if it had just grown or had always been there.
"I can’t tell if this is a hallucination or not... That attack was indeed powerful, bypassing my Black Iron Armor and causing actual damage to the flesh."
"Old Cat, do you see the eye now?" Lu Yuan poured some oil and burned his flesh, along with the eye, to ashes.
After a moment of silence, Old Cat replied, "I see it now, but you can’t completely trust me... I can be affected by the ability too."
"Unless I enter the most primitive working mode, but then I’ll lose intelligence and only make repetitive ticking noises."
