Chapter 640: 639 is not unwilling
Mo Xiuchen had no way of dealing with Wen Ran, left with no option but to sit at the marble table under the tree, chin resting on his hand, looking up at the naughty Wen Ran in the tree.
“Ranran, be careful.”
“Ranran, that branch is too small to hold your weight.”
“Ranran, don’t climb any higher.”
Mo Xiuchen watched from below with trepidation, while Wen Ran played gleefully above. She had always had a love for climbing things. She had been somewhat restrained when she was with Jingyi, but less so after being adopted by the Wen family. They doted on her like a precious gem, allowing her to act as she pleased. As a result, she hadn’t learned much about being a proper lady but had instead grown into a wild and lawless young girl.
Ever since the Wen family had that incident, Wen Ran’s nature had suddenly changed. Now, having been repressed for over half a year, upon arriving in this rural area, her original nature was released once again.
Although worried, seeing her radiant smile warmed Mo Xiuchen’s heart.
“Xiuchen, just eat first, I’m going to pick some more from that tree.”
Twenty minutes later, Wen Ran hopped down from the first tree, placing the harvested cherries on the marble table before turning to climb another tree.
However, before she could lift her foot, Mo Xiuchen caught her wrist, pulling gently to bring her tumbling into his arms.
His other arm also moved naturally to encircle her.
“Ranran, don’t go.”
His voice, a low resonating whisper filled with worried undertones, fell on her ears.
Wen Ran looked into his deep eyes flickering with concern, her heart softened. She sighed and said, “Alright, I won’t go for now… After dinner, I’ll…”
“Even after dinner, you’re not to climb the tree. If you want cherries, I’ll pick them for you.”
Mo Xiuchen interrupted her with a tone that brooked no opposition.
Never mind falling from the tree, he couldn’t even bear to see her moving around among the branches, afraid that a careless turn would scratch her face.
“Xiuchen, you’re being so domineering,” Wen Ran pouted, clearly not satisfied.
Mo Xiuchen’s eyes flickered, avoiding her gaze, he said softly, “Ranran, I’m going to cook for you.”
Wen Ran pressed her lips together and looked down without speaking.
The atmosphere suddenly became somewhat subtle and still.
Mo Xiuchen stared at the silent Wen Ran, a touch of hurt crossed his heart, after a few seconds of silence, he pulled her into his embrace, holding her lightly.
Suddenly, Wen Ran looked up, her eyes bright with a radiant smile, showing no trace of unhappiness, “Aren’t you going to cook for me? Let’s go!”
Mo Xiuchen smiled and nodded.
Once they entered the villa, as Wen Ran was admiring the interior decoration, she asked, “Xiuchen, just how many villas do you have? Or how many other things do I not know about? Instead of telling me one thing each day, you might as well spill everything at once.”
Mo Xiuchen laughed loudly, holding her hand and carrying a bag into the kitchen. He placed the bag on the marble countertop and gently said, “Ranran, besides the house we’re living in now and this place, there is nothing else.”
“I’ll start cooking, you can go upstairs and look around.”
Wen Ran nodded with a smile, “Ok, I won’t disturb you. You cook and I’ll go and look upstairs. Maybe I’ll find a clue or two.”
“Haha, I’m afraid you will be disappointed.”
Mo Xiuchen raised an eyebrow and looked unaffected.
Although the villa was rarely inhabited, it was clear that someone regularly cleaned it. That’s why it was so clean, without the faintest smell of dust.
Wen Ran climbed the wooden stairs to the second floor, to inspect the rooms upstairs as per Mo Xiuchen’s request, while in the downstairs kitchen, Mo Xiuchen rolled up his sleeves, washed his hands, and began to cook.
He was midway through chopping vegetables when suddenly a wave of dizziness hit him. The knife in his hand spun out of control, its sharp edge cutting into his finger.
As the pain radiated from his fingertip, he lightly furrowed his brows, put down the knife, and leaned his tall figure against the counter. His hand gently pressed against his inner eye to relieve the pain.
After a while, when the dizziness subsided, he washed the cut on his finger to remove the blood, found a first-aid kit in a drawer in the living room, and put a band-aid over the wound.
Returning to the kitchen to finish cutting the vegetables, Mo Xiuchen suddenly remembered the words Gu Kai had said to him that morning at the hospital.
His handsome face slightly changed, and he looked up towards the second floor. In his deep, dark eyes, a subtle layer of sadness began to accumulate. He tightened his grip on the knife’s handle, but as he thought of the woman upstairs, the sadness in his eyes slowly faded. The corners of his mouth curved into a shallow smile.
Ranran, I won’t leave you. I promise.
