Evolution: A Warlock's Rise To Power

Chapter 207: Nightmares

Chapter 207: Nightmares

Lucan stood high in the air on his flying carpet with Sturdy beside him. They were floating over the top of the base camp. Below them, all the players from the Windy Willow organization listened closely. They were already all aware of the problem with a direct raid on the fortress. Even if they were successful, the fortress would be lost during the battle. But now Lucan's plan seemed to be plausible. If they pulled it off, they would be able to take over the fortress after one last large battle.

" And that is the plan." Lucan finished telling the people below about their next course of action."

"Alright, you heard the client. To pull this off everyone will need to pull out all of their powerful attacks. We will wait till tomorrow morning, so everyone has a chance to have their strong attacks come off of cooldown. Until then, we will continue with small probing attacks outside of the fortress. Work hard and their will be a bonus coming your way." Sturdy said.

The crowd below cheered before going back to work.

Originally there were some people who were skeptical about the collaboration with Lucan, but after setting up their base in his fortress and working in the surrounding area, they all saw the benefits. On top of that, they all knew that Lucan gave out proper rewards for a good job. Everyone now was very satisfied with the decision to come to the shadow realms and base themselves there.

Sturdy followed Lucan back into the command tent after they finished addressing the other people.

"I will rest here for now." Lucan said. "I want to wait for Little Brown to return before launching our attack tonight."

"Alright. I will keep an eye on things outside. I will notify you if we discover any changes to the situation." Sturdy said before leaving the tent.

(Several days ago)

A small brown bird flew through a portal, leaving the nine hells behind as he entered the material realm.

Little Brown was a little sad that Lucan sent him away. But he also knew that his master had entrusted him with an important mission.

The little brown bird flapped its wings as it soared through the air traveling east in search of its target. When the bird grew tired it would only rest for a few minutes before returning back to its flight. The little fella was determined to find its target.

Right now Little Brown only knew the general direction and was constantly searching. With the help of updates from Lucan provided by Super, Little Brown came to the fortress that was suspected to be housing his target.

The mission Lucan gave Little Brown was to set its eyes on the target. After another half day of searching, he found who he was looking for in one of the upper rooms of a tower inside the fortress.

Little Brown had always been upset that he wasn't as strong as Adrestia, or Creepy, even though he was his master's original pet. He had always wanted to become stronger so he could help out Lucan like the others.

This time, he was selected for the mission because of his weak attributes and the fact that he was still level one. Who would pay attention to a level on bird who flew around and occasionally let out a chirp. Even though he normally disliked how weak he was, Little Brown couldn't resist chirping happily since he was chosen precisely because of his low level which would result in him being overlooked.

Little Brown happily sang his bird song while thinking about all the drops of honey he would receive after successfully completing his mission. The bird sang while sitting on the windowsill and keeping an eye on his target.

When the person he watched finally went to sleep, Little Brown, got Lucan's attention and alerted him to the fact that everything was set and ready.

The bird felt a spell being cast through it and didn't resist. It wasn't like he would be able to anyway.

Little Brown watched as the magic took effect on the person sleeping on the bed. The man began to twitch and shudder. After ten minutes, he suddenly sat up in a cold sweat and let out a yell. His face was pale and his eyes quickly scanned the room but he found he was alone.

Hearing his yell, two guards ran into the room to check the situation.

"What is wrong?"

"Where is the enemy?" The guards asked.

"It is nothing." The man in the bed said. "It was only a nightmare."

"Are you sure boss? You don't look that great."

"Get out of here, I will be fine in the morning." The man said, forcing the two guards out of his room.

Little bird watched from the windowsill while keeping quiet. Eventually the man returned to his sleep.

When the morning came, he didn't look any better. He got out of bed, was still sore and stiff. He felt like crap and slept like crap, but so many things had been happening recently that he didn't have time to concern himself with it.

As the man went about his business, Little Brown was always nearby. He was keeping a watchful eye focused on his target at all times. He made sure to follow his master's orders. He was to watch the target and follow him while remaining hidden.

Soon it was nighttime again and the man returned to his tower. After not getting a good nights sleep he looked exhausted and eager to rest up for the next day.

When the target was asleep again, Little Brown reported it to Lucan. Soon enough, the magic began to flow through the bird again and another spell was cast through Little Brown.

Ten minutes later, the man jumped out of his bed swinging his sword in a panic, but nobody was in his room. Hearing the commotion, the two guards rushed into the room again. This time they saw their boss was in an even worse state compared to last night.

Before they could even say anything, the man hollered at the guards.

"GET OUT. DON'T DISTURB MY REST AND DO YOUR DAMN JOBS!" The man roared.

The guards quickly retreated as Little Brown watched the man struggle to fall asleep again. This time it took him over an hour to fall asleep.

When Little Brown could see the first rays of the sun's light on the horizon, he began to sing his early morning bird song.

The chirping at the window woke the man who was only able to enter a shallow sleep a few hours ago.

"DAMN BIRD!" Cursed the man while throwing a cup from the nightstand towards the window.

*Shatter*

The glass broke into pieces as the cup soared outside the tower window.

*Chirp* *Chirp* *Chirp*

Sang Little Brown as he flew into the air. The man in the room cursed the bird that sounded like it was laughing at him as it sang its bird song.

The guards heard the commotion and rushed into the room thinking an assassin had broken through the window and attacked their boss. But the only thing they saw was their boss standing at the window in a deranged state cursing at the birds who chirped early in the morning while looking for their worms.

The two guards looked at each other before turning and leaving before even checking with their boss.

The man tried to fall back to sleep but he was unable to get any good rest and eventually walked out of his room, filled with fatigue and accompanied by large bags under his eyes.

The next night the man returned back to his room extremely drunk, he wobbled to his bed looking like absolute crap before he crashed onto the mattress and passed out.

An hour latter he jumped from his bed cursing.

"FUCKING HELL! SCREW THESE NIGHTMARES! WHAT DID I EVER DO TO DESERVE THIS!"

The man started to smash all the furniture in the room in a fit of rage. The guards outside didn't even bother to enter this time.

The days went on and on as the man was unable to ever sleep through the night. Each day he woke up in worse condition compared to the night before.

Little Brown was thrilled to be of use to his master and felt proud to be of service.

During one afternoon Little Brown overheard the guards talking.

"Bone Crusher has pretty much gone insane. Why do we have to guard such a useless boss."

"Don't mention this to anyone, but I heard tomorrow, he is going to be relieved of his duties. Ever since he had that clash with Lucan he has been on a downward spiral. The higher ups no longer have faith in him and are unwilling to keep losing losing money under his command."

"Does that mean we will be reassigned soon?"

"It is very likely. So keep up the hard work and we may be transfer somewhere we can actually put our talents to use."

Little Brown chirped happily when he heard the news. The man that went after his master's woman deserved to be punished. Little Brown quickly reported what he heard to Lucan. And coincidently, Lucan called for him to return. It was time for Little Brown to return after a successful mission.

Little Brown used Ethereal Dive to return to the shadow realm and began his flight back to his master location. On his journey back, Lucan showered the small bird with praise for successfully accomplishing his mission.
